The main objective of PRIAMO was to provide new information on the dynamics between prokaryotes and particulate organic carbon being exported to the deep sea. Specifically, the research aimed to:
- investigate the metabolic changes (growth rates, C incorporation, organic matter degradation activities) that may affect prokaryotic communities in the presence of different concentrations of particulate organic matter.
- Assess potential rates of algal-derived organic C consumption by structurally and functionally different prokaryotic communities (surface vs. bottom).
- analyze the behavior from a microscale perspective of microorganisms in the presence of Antarctic planktonic microalgae
